Book Review: A Guide to Green Housekeeping

I picked up this book at one of our local big box book stores.  What attracted me most was the pictures, which are quite beautiful.  Wonderful images showing vintage home goods and garden equipment, which is right up my alley decorating-wise.  Along with the photographs are some hand-drawn images detailing the steps for various recipes.  The book is well-bound and nicely indexed.

A Guide to Green Housekeeping is a holistic book about “going green”, including the usual tips on recycling, composting, reducing your carbon footprint, growing your own food, and managing a pantry.  The first chapter covers housework without chemicals, and has some nice tips.  I used the tip on cleaning a decanter with eggshells, baking soda, warm water and vinegar to get some stubborn red wine stains out of a ship’s decanter that I had.

The book also covers some enjoyable topics like antiquing, gift making, jam-making, and gardening.  While it doesn’t go in-depth into any one topic, it is a very nice general overview of the subject with some great tips, tricks, and recipes interspersed.  With the index it’s easy to find what you need, and the pages aren’t too cluttered with tiny text.  And like I said, the pictures are wonderfully inspiring.  I’d give it a solid 4 stars, glad I bought it.
